  • The Archibald Prize was first awarded in 1921
  • The prize is named after J.F. Archibald, editor of The Bulletin at the time
  • The first prize awarded was 400 pounds
  • The prize awarded in 2012 was $75 000
  • Approximately 700 entrants each year, with only about 40 selected as finalists
  • This year’s winner, Tim Storrier, won with a self-portrait, which has been deemed quite controversial

During my time at uni and college I loved having students from abroad in my class. It brought such a breadth of experience and perspective, and made the classes seem a little more exotic, with all those accents flying around.

It seems there are a lot of international students coming to study on our shores these days. In fact, a lot of them are here in NSW. The ABS has come through with some interesting stats on this particular demographic of students.

KONY2012. The project that’s been both up and down in this past week.

Here is the breakdown of their expenses, which is where a lot of the criticism has been directed.

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and they suggested I might like to share it on my blog. So why not use it as my first Staturday post for the new year?

Water. It’s pretty important. It takes about:

21 litres of water to grow a potato

41.5 litres of water to grow an orange

98.5 litres of water to make a glass of wine

140 litres of water to make a pint of beer

1,998 litres of water to make a hamburger

Data taken from this book, via the Notebook: magazine (which is now unfortunately out of print).

We had meat pies for dinner last night. Perfect for the end of the week, with a bit of potato mash on top and some tomato sauce. I enjoyed one pie, and I enjoyed it over a period of approximately 10 minutes.

Did you know that the guinness world record for the most amount of mince pies eaten in 1 minute is two? Two pies in 60 seconds. It doesn’t really sound worthy of a world record, but I’m sure it’s much harder than it actually sounds!

I’m not actually even sure if these qualify as statistics. Oh well. Here are the books of the Bible in bubble form, according to their length.
